I read that quote and the story that went with it shortly before the new year, it has stayed with me.  Here is the gist of the story.  Mike is at a convenience store one day waiting in line, behind him is a very obnoxious woman, she seems to be under the influence of something.  The person at the head of the line is counting out coins to pay for their purchases.  The obnoxious woman starts complaining very loudly and very rudely.  She is rude the whole time Mike is in the store.  Move forward a couple days and Mike is at a clients company when in comes the obnoxious woman, all cleaned up, for a job interview.  Mike tells the client about his previous encounter with the woman, she does not get the job.
You never know who is watching and how it will affect your life.  There are times when it would be so easy to just destroy someone: they wear the wrong clothes, they have a bad hair cut, they act stupid in public, they take too long in the check out line.  But what if the person you are talking about turns out to be someone who will be very important in your life?  The human resources person having a bad day, your future boss having chemotherapy, a person with a disease that causes random movements or sounds, a relative of  a co-worker with arthritis so bad in their hands getting their money out takes time.  You never know who you will be interacting with.
You lose nothing by being nice to people.  you lose nothing by being patient in line, you lose nothing by treating people the way you would like to be treated.  Remember if you lose your cool you could lose more than you know.

Happy thoughts for a happy day!
