Doomed, dooooommmmed DOOOOMMMEDDD! I tell ya we are pretty damn doomed. I am working on my Advanced Marketing Research group project and I am feeling pretty damn doomed about it right now. I seem to be the only one who even minutely understands the software and math part of the project and it is mighty darn tiny at that. I have watched more Youtube videos on how to do a hypothesis test in SPSS than I have watched videos in the last year. Doomed, dooooommmmmeddd, DOOMED!
My head hurts just thinking about it. I went to bed thinking about it, I woke up this morning thinking about it. I am having nightmares and daymares thinking about it. Doomed, little whimpering noises, head on the table, many sighs, and a few gut wrenching deep breathes.
I found a couple of articles and a few videos that were helpful, I have the chi-squared test figured out, I performed a linear regression analysis, I think I finally picked the “right” variables. I have some answers that sort of make sense. Now I just have to write words to go with the numbers. Doomed, still but not so much as before, I think a break and some exercise to clear the head is in order. . .
@rixiren here. In case you still need help –
Is your dependent variable (the ‘outcome’ variable you are trying to understand) categorical (set levels/group) or continuous (a numeric measure like weight, time)?
If you can describe the variables you are working with/the hypotheses you want to test I might be able to help 🙂
If it’s a continuous variable, you may be better off using T-Tests or ANOVA to test the difference between the means based on your independent variables.
Note you can only use linear regression with continuous variables (not categorical) – be careful not to violate the assumptions of the test or your results could be unreliable.
The study has to do with finding a correlation between attractiveness and pedagogical ability. Pedagogical means of or related to educational abilities.
These are the hypothesis’ that I think I am looking at.
H1 = more attractive the teacher the more positive the students attitude toward the teaching ability
H2 = less attractive the teacher the more negative the students attitude toward the teaching ability
H0 = attractiveness does not affect students attitude toward the teaching ability
It is a 7 point scale, with x1=values of 1-attractive and 2-not attractive and x2= values of 1-high pedagogy and 2-low pedagogy. I ran a chi-squared, t-test and an ANOVA. There is a calculated Average for the evaluation column, I used that along with the x1 and x2 for the values for the test. I seem to have gotten answers that make sense.
Further – check this page for info on which tests to use in which circumstances

Looks scary but is actually really helpful as long as you have a strong grasp on your independent and dependent variables.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
No worries. If you get stuck shout out and I can help via email, just let me know what the variables are and what relationship you are hypothesising.
BTW I’m a marketing research/analytics professional so deal with this stuff on a daily basis – seems scary to start with but you’ll quickly get the hang of it.
Good luck!
It would be easier if some of this was being taught face to face. I am basically teaching myself how to do it. I am working on my MBA on line so really, really appreciate your help. I will be reading through the website you sent and when I have questions I will for sure take you up on your offer.
You got great points there, that’s why I always love checking out your blog.
I know this is a week late, but I certainly could appreciate your frustration with that class. Too bad you didn’t know me well enough to email me directly like a few other of our classmates did. I used a One-Way ANOVA to test the hypotheses and found a great resource that helped me to understand it better.
If it makes you feel any better, I also wound up having to re-run some of the other analyses that weren’t making sense.
Now that you have been through the mine field, take comfort in knowing that you were in the same boat with other classmates who found the flow of information to be semi-articulated, at best. I also was really teed-off that our final exam grade took more than a week to be posted. He also never responded to any of my emails through the term.
And look where you are now! Not long to go, girl…hang in there!
K,
Thanks for the words of encouragement. We pulled that thing together at the last minute. On Wednesday we were still struggling and by Friday we had picked a direction we all agreed on and got it finished and turned in.
What a bear that software has turned out to be. But we all seem to have gotten it figured out and now on to Consumer Behavior!
